My Background
I grew up in Poland on my grandparents’ farm. Here, you could see the genesis of food as it was cultivated from seed to plate. It was all organic, not because it was trendy or profitable, but because this was the traditional way of life. We used to eat what was seasonal and accessible without gigantic international supermarkets nearby. Yes, we had to be creative and work harder, but for us, it was just the normal way of living. I have therefore had the chance to observe the enormous effort involved in producing food from scratch the “old-fashioned way”. I have been able to see how things changed with the times and the massive difference between the way food was produced in the past and is today, both in my homeland and here in the UK as well.
I qualified as a general nurse in Poland. When I did my nursing training, there was very little awareness of the relationship of nutritional science to human health and well-being. I lived away from home during my study, and my eating habits became poor. I paid no attention whatsoever to my daily food choices. I did not think that it could make much difference to my family or me, especially with relation to our health.
But life itself decided to present an opportunity to complement my knowledge through challenging personal circumstances. My daughter was diagnosed with a complex developmental condition at an early age. She also had other concurrent health issues, one of which was with her digestive system. It made her daily life very difficult, and she seemed miserable. Unfortunately, the traditional medical world was unable to offer us much help with this. Desperate to ease her suffering, I searched for alternatives. Among other helpful interventions, I found out about Nutritional Therapy and applied its approach, intending to rebalance the problems in my daughter’s gut. In the days and weeks following this, her overall well-being hugely improved. She seemed much happier, despite her ongoing diagnosis. This improvement which seemed to be linked to our intervention, led me to want to explore the field of nutritional therapy in more depth.
My experiences had opened my eyes, and I decided to undertake Nutritional Therapy training at the degree level. Once I had completed my education, I began to think about what area of health I would like to specialise in. During one of my training courses, I met a specialist in cardiovascular health. His incredible work inspired me to go in this direction. Being aware of the enormous challenge that cardiovascular diseases are today, I have become passionate about helping people to overcome this problem.
The “seed to plate” encounters I had growing up and my life’s experience and relationship with food, the cornerstone of life, has made me passionate about diet and nutrition. It has also helped me understand the obstacles people might face when they want or need to change their eating habits.
My deepest hope has always been to support individuals in making a journey towards long-term well-being by applying the science of nutrition to their daily lives. I hope I can help you take this incredible journey to well-being.
